Planning future for Elsternwick Park Nature Reserve

We have adopted a new management model to assist Council in ensuring that the Elsternwick Park Nature Reserve meets the needs and aspirations of all members of the Bayside community.

When the Reserve is operational, the Elsternwick Park Nature Reserve Committee of Management (EPNRCOM) will guide the operation and maintenance conducted by Council, its contractors and external third parties.

Bayside Mayor, Cr Alex del Porto said that under the management model a collaborative group will be responsible for the flora and fauna within the park and will recommend actions that conserve and enhance the values of the Reserve.

“We recognise that decision making is enhanced, and services are better delivered when community members are involved in decisions which affect them.

“The group will focus on delivering the core principles of the nature reserve, including supporting a haven for biodiversity and conservation while also providing a safe and appealing space for passive recreation, engaging volunteers and enabling reconciliation with the traditional owners.

“The community has already played a huge role in developing the masterplan for the Elsternwick Park Nature Reserve. This model creates a unique opportunity for the community to continue to be part of that journey and guide the decisions that will help bring nature back into our urban area, providing refuge and tranquillity for both wildlife and people.”

The management model has been developed by the Elsternwick Park Nature Reserve Community Reference Panel (the Panel) along with Council.

The Committee will also make recommendations to Council on matters such as strategic direction and required capital works in relation to the nature reserve. They will also play an active role in seeking and communicating community views to Council.

A selection criteria and assessment process will govern how Committee members are appointed. Length of tenure on the Committee will also be fixed.

The group will consist of:

  • Two community representatives-representing relevant community groups-in particular the Friends of Group for the EPNR, currently knows as the Elsternwick Park Association.
  • Two environmental experts across all Reserve goals including habitat, management and volunteer engagement.
  • Four residents, rate payers or people with strong connections to the reserve.

It is also proposed for two Bayside Councillors to sit on the Committee.

Council will now commence the process of recruiting and appointing community members to the Committee of Management
