Planning underway on Great Southern agribusiness precinct

  • McGowan Government investing $300,000 to support preliminary planning for an agribusiness precinct near Mount Barker
  • Potential for any future hub to leverage off the internationally competitive agricultural base of the Great Southern
  • The McGowan Government is investing $300,000 to support preliminary planning around a proposed agribusiness precinct near the Great Southern town of Mount Barker.

The Mount Barker district is well-known for producing a range of quality products, including free range poultry and pork.

The proposed Mount Barker AgriBusiness Precinct presents an opportunity to bring together agricultural processing and value-adding businesses to create local jobs.

DevelopmentWA will undertake the preliminary investigations into the precinct, to be based at the Yerriminup Industrial Area south of Mount Barker.

The 193-hectare site is zoned for special restricted uses with a buffer zone to support agribusiness processing.

The investigations will be carried out in liaison with the Great Southern Development Commission and the Shire of Plantagenet.

As stated by Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:

“Our Government is getting on with driving new job opportunities in our regional communities.

“The Great Southern is home to some of the State’s best agricultural produce: the Mount Barker AgriBusiness Precinct has the potential to leverage off this strength and create downstream processing and value adding businesses with significant job opportunities.

“A fully developed precinct will support new businesses, creating jobs and contributing positively to the local and regional economy.

“Initial work will include feasibility investigations and completing an approved sub-division plan and costed detailed design.”
