Playground upgrades open for community consultation

Work has started on Canberra’s biggest suburban infrastructure program, with consultation kicking off on playground upgrades across the city.

“We promised new and upgraded local infrastructure to support jobs, local businesses and communities,” said Minister for Transport and City Services Chris Steel.

“With construction already kicking off at local shopping centres, it’s now time for Canberrans to provide feedback on the design and location of four upgraded playgrounds in Aranda, Ngunnawal, Chisholm and Gordon.

“We know Canberrans love their local playgrounds, so we’re making these important community hubs even better.”

Possible locations for playgrounds for consideration include those on Banambila Street and Jalanga Crescent in Aranda, Alston Street (South) in Chisholm, Point Hut District Park in Gordon and Burramarra Avenue in Ngunnawal.

Playground upgrades already delivered in the last two years include new playgrounds at Narrabundah, Waramanga, Torrens, Higgins and Richardson – as well as new nature play spaces at Yerrabi Pond in Gungahlin and at the Kambah Adventure Play Space.

Consultation on further play space upgrades in Lyons and Kaleen will be undertaken later in the term.

The ACT Government has recently concluded consultation on a new destination playground for the Inner North, as part of delivering on another election commitment.

The community provided feedback that nature play, structures for climbing and water play are important features for this great new community asset. The Government is committed to delivering the new playground, which is proposed to be located at the green space next to Canberra Technology Park.

The site was chosen for its proximity to the Phillip Avenue light rail stop, future Garden City Cycle Route and the established facilities at Watson shops. The listening report from this consultation is available here.

“These investments are working to support local Canberra jobs and create better public spaces where people can come together in play,” said Minister Steel.
