Police arrest man after dumping stolen car in Fawkner

Moreland Tasking Unit officers have arrested a man after he dumped a stolen car in Fawkner this morning.

Patrolling officers first spotted the car at a service station on Sydney Road before a check of the Mitsubishi ASX revealed the car to be stolen about 1.15am.

Police followed the car to Camp Road and with the assistance of the Airwing coordinated units on the ground as the car drove along Pascoe Vale Road.

The car was seen to drive on the wrong side of Pascoe Vale Road at speed before it entered onto the Western Freeway at Western Ring Road into oncoming traffic.

The 28-year-old Shepparton man got off the freeway and dumped the car in a carpark near the intersection of Sydney and Camp roads in Fawkner.

He tried to run from police before he was arrested by Moreland Tasking Unit following a short foot chase.

The Shepparton man, who is currently assisting police with their enquiries, is also wanted in relation to nine outstanding warrants.

He is expected to be interviewed in relation to reckless conduct endangering life, theft of motor car, handle stolen goods and dangerous driving while being pursued by police.

The Mitsubishi is alleged to have been stolen from an address in Reservoir in November.

Anyone who witnessed the Mitsubishi and its manner of driving or anyone with dashcam is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
