Police arrest man over chemicals found at Hackham West

An 18-year-old man has been arrested after police located chemicals and glassware used in the making of both illicit drugs and explosives in a rear shed of his Hackham West home last night.

Just before 4.30pm Wednesday 25 September, Serious Crime Task Force Detectives searched a property on Haven Way locating what appeared to be a clandestine drug laboratory in the rear shed. The house was subsequently cordoned off overnight.

This morning following further investigation, it was discovered chemicals located inside the shed could allegedly be used in the manufacture of illicit drugs and explosives.

One chemical in particular was believed to be volatile and unstable so Bomb Response Technicians were called in to safely remove the chemicals from the scene. Police patrols cordoned off the street and asked residents to stay indoors, but no homes were evacuated.

Just after 10am this morning Bomb Response technicians safely removed the chemicals which will be destroyed.

An 18-year-old man from Hackham West has been arrested and charged with manufacturing a controlled drug, manufacturing explosives, and possessing explosive chemicals and equipment.

He is expected to appear at the Christies Beach Magistrates Court on 7 November.
