Police charge four over firearm offences at Gunnedah

Two men and two teenagers have been charged after an air rifle was allegedly fired at a boy and a man was threatened in Gunnedah.

Just before 3.30pm yesterday (Thursday 17 August 2023), police were called to Lincoln Street, Gunnedah, following reports a shot had been fired.

Officers attached to Oxley Police District attended and were told a 13-year-old boy was riding his bike when a Hilux drove near him, and the passenger fired an air rifle out the window.

The boy – who wasn’t injured – rode home and alerted his parents.

A short time later, the occupants of the Hilux confronted and threatened a man with machetes in a nearby street.

Witnesses contacted police and the group fled the scene.

A short time later, police located the Hilux on Marquis Street, Gunnedah, and arrested four men and a woman.

They were all taken to Gunnedah Police Station.

During a subsequent search of the vehicle, officers located and seized an air rifle, two machetes and two knives.

The 18-year-old man was charged with possess unauthorised firearm, fire firearm in or near public place, and two counts of armed with intent to commit indictable offence.

He was refused bail to appear at Gunnedah Local Court on Tuesday (5 September 2023).

Another 18-year-old man was charged with two charges of use intimidation/violence to unlawfully influence person, possess unauthorised firearm, and owner cause/permit/allow learner breach.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Gunnedah Local Court on Tuesday (5 September 2023).

The 17-year-old teenager was charged with learner not accompanied by driver/police officer/tester and use intimidation/violence to unlawfully influence person.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Children’s Court on Tuesday (5 September 2023).

The 15-year-old teenager was charged with goods in personal custody suspected being stolen.

He was refused bail to appear at a children’s court on Friday (18 August 2023).

The 19-year-old woman was released pending further inquiries.
