Police charge man after Collingwood gun grab incident

Armed Crime Squad detectives have this morning arrested a man following a firearm incident in Collingwood last week.

Yarra Criminal Investigation Unit detectives had been at a Dight Street address as part of an investigation into alleged burglaries and robberies just after 7am on Friday, 19 August.

While attempting to arrest a 33-year-old Collingwood man, police will allege the man grabbed at an officer’s gun.

The police firearm was discharged during the scuffle, but nobody was physically injured as a result of the discharge.

Detectives from the Armed Crime Squad and a number of other police units have conducted a significant search over the past few days in an attempt to locate him.

With the assistance of the Critical Incident Response Team, he was arrested in Fitzroy shortly after 11am today.

He was charged with reckless conduct endangering life, assault police, resist police, threat to inflict serious injury and burglary.

He was also charged with robbery, intentionally cause injury, affray, burglary, theft, theft of motor vehicle, deal with proceeds of crime and fail to appear on bail in relation to matters unrelated to the Collingwood incident.

He will be presented to Melbourne Magistrates’ Court later today.
