Police charge man after Girrawheen incident which left a youth seriously injures

Joondalup Detectives have charged a 49-year-old man after an incident in Girrawheen last night (16 November 2019), in which an 18-year-old man from Noranda was seriously injured.

About 7.30pm on Saturday 16 November 2019, it is alleged the 49-year old man was at a Shopping Centre located on Marangaroo Drive and Templeton Avenue in Girrawheen. The 18-year-old victim was also at the shopping centre in company with friends.

It is further alleged an altercation occurred between the man, the victim and his friends and during this time the man was the driver of a Jeep Cherokee vehicle.

It is alleged the man began to drive his vehicle towards the victim and the victim’s friends. The victim, who was riding a bicycle, rode through the car park in an attempt to escape as the man continued to drive his vehicle towards the victim at speed, and in doing so gained distance on the victim. As the victim approached the western end of the car park on his bicycle he slowed down as he mounted the median curbing and the man continued to drive the Jeep towards him.

It is further alleged the man drove the Jeep Cherokee at speed directly into the rear of the victim’s bicycle before driving the Jeep over the top of the victim and the bicycle before slowing down and coming to a stop on the edge of the median strip.

It is alleged the man at no time rendered any assistance or check on the welfare of the victim who was lying on the ground behind the Jeep. He was arrested a short time later by police.

The victim, an 18-year-old man from Noranda was conveyed by ambulance to Royal Perth Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Jeep Cherokee, a 49-year-old man from Girrawheen, will appear before the Perth Magistrates Court today (17 November 2019) charged with:-

• Dangerous Driving Occasioning Grievous Bodily Harm;

• Driver Failed to Stop and Ensure Assistance Received after Incident Occasioning Grievous Bodily Harm; and

• Failed to Comply with a Requirement to Provide Sample or Accompany Police (Circumstance Aggravated).
