Police charge man after Melton carjacking

A man and woman have been arrested following a carjacking and subsequent pursuit in Melbourne’s west overnight.

It is alleged a food delivery driver had just returned to his vehicle after dropping an order in Faye Street, Melton just after 9pm, when a man threatened him with a weapon and pulled him from his vehicle.

Investigators have been told two men then entered his vehicle before fleeing.

Police later spotted the car in the vicinity of Barries Road just after midnight, where a short pursuit was initiated before being abandoned.

The car continued to be monitored by police and a female passenger was observed leaving the vehicle in a nearby carpark.

A 28-year-old Melton woman was arrested in the car park a short time later.

The car was eventually abandoned on Bittern Street with the driver being arrested at a Plover Street residence after attempting to flee on foot.

The driver, a 26-year-old Melton West man, has been charged with seven offences including aggravated carjacking with an offensive weapon, theft of motor vehicle, conduct endangering serious injury, dangerous driving while being pursued by police, and other driving related offences.

He is expected to face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court later today.

The passenger has been released pending further enquiries.
