Police charge man after two-vehicle crash in Villawood

A man will face court today charged with numerous traffic and property-related offences following a crash in Villawood last night.

About 9.15pm (Friday 12 August 2022), officers from Traffic South West attached to Strike Force Puma, were conducting roadside breath testing on the Hume Highway, Carramar, as part of Operation Fume, when a Holden Cruze approached the testing site, before turning into Quest Street where a second random breath testing site was set-up.

The driver – a 29-year-old man – attempted to reverse the vehicle away from the testing site, when police stopped and spoke to him.

As officers were speaking to the man, he allegedly drove from the scene along the Hume Highway, and a pursuit was initiated before being terminated a short time later due to safety concerns.

The man’s vehicle collided with a Toyota Kluger at the intersection of The Horsley Drive, Villawood, a short time later.

The man allegedly attempted to run from the scene; however, he was arrested a short distance away following a foot pursuit.

The driver of the Toyota – a 40-year-old woman – and her two passengers, aged eight and 10 years, were treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics at the scene for minor injuries.

Police searched the man and located $2,200 in cash. A subsequent search of the Holden resulted in a number of items being seized including saws, a jackhammer, power tools, and a saw kit, with a combined estimated value of over $10,000.

Further checks revealed the man’s Learner’s driver’s licence had expired.

He was taken to Fairfield Police Station, where he was charged with:

– Police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously,

– Never licensed person drive vehicle on road,

– Not give particulars to owner of damaged property,

– Goods in personal custody suspected being stolen (not m/v), and

– Goods suspected stolen in/on premises (not m/v).

The man was refused bail and will appear at Parramatta Bail Court today (Saturday 13 August 2022).
