Police charge man over domestic violence and weapons act offences at Mount Isa

Mount Isa detectives investigating an alleged serious domestic violence incident on July 29 in which a woman and a boy were physically assaulted arrested a man at a Mount Isa service station yesterday with a search of his vehicle locating seven firearms.

The 35-year-old Mount Isa man appeared in the local magistrates’ court today charged with 16 offences including assault occasioning bodily harm (domestic violence offence), common assault (domestic violence offence), dangerous conduct with a weapon, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failure to securely store ammunition and seven counts of failing to securely store weapons.

Following the alleged violent assault at a remote rural property on the night of July 29 the woman and her children fled with the man following them in another vehicle and driving dangerously.

The woman sought assistance from a farm house she drove across and police were called.

Extensive investigations and patrols by police resulted in officers arresting the man at the service station at around 1.30pm on July 30.

Police have taken possession of the firearms and ammunition and commenced action to revoke the man’s firearms license.

“A very dangerous situation had developed requiring quick and effective response by Dajarra and Mount Isa Police. Police have bought an offender to justice and most importantly ensured the safety of the victims who continue to be supported,” Acting Detective Inspector Michelle Clark said

The man has been remanded in custody to re-appear in the Mount Isa Magistrates Court at a later date.
