Police charge man with assaulting taxi driver at Sydney Airport

The AFP has charged a Northern NSW man for allegedly assaulting a taxi driver at Sydney Airport on Wednesday, 26 October 2022.

The Tweed Shire man, 44, is expected to appear in Downing Centre Local Court today (27 October 2022).

AFP officers and NSW Police officers responded to an incident at the taxi rank of Sydney Airport on 26 October 2022, where the allegedly intoxicated man had assaulted a taxi driver and punched his windscreen, causing it to shatter and crack.

The man was arrested at the airport and escorted to Mascot Police Station, where he was charged with three offences.

AFP Sydney Airport Police Commander, Detective Superintendent Morgen Blunden said violent and disorderly behaviour will not be tolerated at Sydney Airport.

“The AFP is working closely with its aviation and law enforcement partners to ensure the safety of the travelling public at Sydney Airport,” Det-Supt. Blunden said.

“Anyone who acts disorderly and endangers the safety of other travellers or airport workers will be held accountable for their actions, and face the risk of spending time in jail.”

The man was charged with:

  • One count of destroying or damaging property, contrary to section 195(1)(A) of the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW). The maximum penalty for this offence is five years’ imprisonment;
  • One count of common assault, contrary to section 61 of the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW). The maximum penalty for this offence is two years’ imprisonment; and
  • One count of being drunk/disorderly at airports, contrary to section 4bz(1)(A) of the Airports (control of On Airport Activities) Regulations 1997 (Cth). The maximum penalty for this offence is 10 penalty units.
