Police have arrested three people following an affray at the Melbourne Cricket Ground last Saturday (11 May).
It is alleged the fight broke out between a number of males inside the stadium just before the final siren of the football match.
A 36-year-old Diggers Rest man was arrested on Tuesday (14 May) and charged with affray. He has been bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on 19 August.
Two other men, a 41-year-old and a 20-year-old from Rosebud were both arrested and charged with affray earlier this morning. Both males have been bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on 16 August.
The investigation into the incident remains ongoing and police have released an image of a fourth male who they wish to speak to who may be able to assist with their enquiries.
The fourth male is described as medium build, with dark hair and dark facial hair.
Victoria Police Commander Tim Hansen said the message to the community was very clear – police will not tolerate any behaviour that compromises the safety of others.
“There will be a highly visible presence at sporting matches each weekend in public, membership and corporate areas,” Cmdr Hansen said.
“Tens of thousands of sporting fans attend matches every week. The vast majority support their team and enjoy the atmosphere safely and responsibly.
“Victoria Police meets with sporting venues weekly to discuss police and security plans for the week’s upcoming matches.
“We work collaboratively with event security and stadium management to monitor crowd behaviour and alcohol consumption throughout the game.
“Victoria Police treats poor behaviour at sports matches very seriously, and on occasion there are a few individuals who choose to do the wrong thing.
“Police recognise the importance of gaining early awareness of unruly fan behaviour as it begins to develop, and we encourage fans to report anti-social behaviour to stadium security or nearby police.
“People will be held accountable for their actions. Anyone found to be drunk, assaulting someone or engaging in an affray at sporting matches can expect to be arrested by police and put before the court.
“Upon conviction, police will consider making an application for Exclusion Orders which can see people banned from licenced premises for two years.”
