Police charge two after nearly $10mil worth of prohibited drugs concealed in sewing equipment in Murrumbidgee

Detectives have charged two men after seizing nearly 10kgs of ‘ice’ and 2kgs of heroin following an investigation into the alleged importation of prohibited drugs in the state’s Murrumbidgee region.

On Monday 4 October 2021, officers from Australian Border Force (ABF) intercepted a consignment of sewing thread that arrived in Sydney from Kazakhstan, destined for an address in Griffith.

During a subsequent deconstruction, 9.7kgs of methylamphetamine and almost 2.1kgs of heroin was found concealed in the consignment, representing a combined estimated street value of $9.73mil.

An investigation was commenced by officers from Murrumbidgee Police District.

Following inquiries, investigators, with assistance from Monaro Region Enforcement Squad, attended a rural property on Murrumbidgee Avenue, Hanwood about 2.30pm yesterday (Thursday 14 October 2021).

Two men, aged 27 and 40, allegedly ran from police and were arrested a short distance away.

During a subsequent search of the property, police seized items relating to prohibited drugs, as well as a semi-automatic shot gun.

They were taken to Griffith Police Station where the older man was charged with two counts of possess large commercial quantity of an unlawfully imported border controlled drug – serious indictable offence, and possess unauthorised prohibited firearm.

The younger man was charged with possess large commercial quantity of an unlawfully imported border-controlled drug – serious indictable offence.

The Griffith men were refused bail to appear in Griffith Local Court today (15 October 2021).

Investigations are ongoing.
