Police charge two after pursuit at Newcastle 28 April

A man and woman have been charged following a pursuit through Newcastle last night.

About 11.20pm (Thursday 27 April 2023), police from Newcastle City Police District were patrolling Newcastle Road, Jesmond, when they attempted to stop a station wagon for the purpose of a random breath test.

The driver allegedly failed to stop when directed and a pursuit was initiated travelling to Kotara South, where road spikes were successfully deployed, deflating the tyres.

A 36-year-old man and 29-year-old woman were arrested at the scene and taken to Newcastle Police Station.

The man was charged with five counts of possess prohibited drug, police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, and hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty.

The woman was charged with possess prohibited drug, possess prescribed restricted substance, and breach of bail.

Both were refused bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court today (Friday 28 April 2023).
