Police charge woman over random stabbing in Haymarket

A woman has been charged after allegedly assaulting and stabbing another woman in an unprovoked attack in Sydney yesterday.

Police have been told a 63-year-old woman was standing on the footpath along Eddy Avenue will allege about 7.10pm (Thursday 20 August 2020), when she was approached by a woman she didn’t know.

The unknown woman allegedly hit her in the face with the handle of a knife and her fist, then pushed her to the ground. She then allegedly stabbed the woman in the shoulder.

Police Transport Command officers were nearby alerted and following a short foot pursuit, a 35-year-old woman was arrested in Belmore Park.

The older lady was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for treatment of stab wound to her shoulder and cuts to her face, and swelling to her head.

The younger woman was taken to Day Street Police Station where she was charged with wound with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, use weapon to avoid apprehension, offensive behaviour, wielding a knife in a public place, and possession of a knife in a public place.

She was refused bail to appear before Central Local Court today (Friday 21 August 2020).
