Road safety around schools was the focus for police at the start of Term 3, with fines and defect notices issued to multiple drivers.
On Monday 24 July and Tuesday 25 July, between the drop-off times of 8am to 9am and pick-up times of 2.45pm to 3.45pm, police conducted Operation Return to School to ensure the safety of children and pedestrians around school zones.
Police visited 261 schools across SA with 53 expiation notices and 86 cautions issued for different offences including speeding, using a hand-held mobile phone while driving, failing to wear a seatbelt and licence or registration offences.
Three drivers were detected drug-driving, while 10 drivers were caught under the influence of alcohol.
16 defect notices were issued during the operation.
Superintendent Darren Fielke, officer in charge of Traffic Services Branch says, “Police are concerned that parents and caregivers are ignoring the road rules while they are taking children to and from school. Police would like to remind all road users, whether you have to stop at a school or not, to be careful around school zones now that students are back in class.
Any incidents of dangerous driving near schools should be reported to the Police Assistance Line immediately on 131444.”
During the previous Operation Return to School in May, 284 schools were visited by police with 65 expiation notices and seven defect notices being issued.
