Police identify 30 motorists a day not belting up, South Australia

About 30 people a day were spoken to by police about failing to fasten their seatbelt as part of a road safety campaign at the weekend.

Operation Belt Up was a state-wide campaign run from midnight Friday until midnight Sunday, intended to focus on seatbelt use.

Noting there had already been one road death this year linked with someone not fastening their seatbelt, Superintendent Bob Gray, the officer in charge of the SA Police Traffic Support Branch said it was a simple safety measure for all motorists.

A total of 92 motorists were detected by police failing to comply with the requirement to wear a seatbelt property adjusted and fastened.

The expiation fee for seatbelt offences is $363, plus a victims of crime levy of $60 and three demerit points unless the offence involves two or more passengers, in which case the expiation is $428, plus five demerit points.

Superintendent Gray said that as one of the Fatal Five – the key factors linked with fatal and serious injury crashes – seatbelt use would remain a focus for the police throughout 2019.
