Police investigate suspicious unit fire in South Sydney

An investigation is underway following a unit fire in South Sydney yesterday afternoon.

About 1pm (Friday 7 January 2022), emergency services were called to a unit block on Florence Avenue, Eastlakes, after reports a fire had erupted within a unit at the location.

Officers attached to South Sydney Police Area Command attended and observed a unit on the second floor alight.

Surrounding units were evacuated as Fire and rescue NSW extinguished the blaze; however, the unit sustained significant damage.

The unit was unoccupied at the time, and no injuries have been reported.

Police established a crime scene, which will undergo specialist forensic examination.

Detectives have commenced an investigation into the cause of the fire, which is being treated as suspicious.
