Police have charged a man after shots were fired during a barricade incident in Sydney’s south-west at the weekend, while a critical incident investigation continues.
About 7.30pm on Sunday (19 December 2021), officers attached to Fairfield City Police Area Command were called to Crabb Place, Cabramatta, following reports of shots fired.
Police were told a man – allegedly armed with two firearms – had barricaded himself inside a home.
When officers went to speak with the man, he allegedly fired a shot towards them.
Police returned fire, before the man went back inside the home.
Local police, with assistance from the Tactical Operations Unit (TOU), Police Negotiators and the Dog Unit, established a perimeter.
Following negotiations, a 55-year-old man was taken into custody just before 9pm.
He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Liverpool Hospital for further treatment.
Following inquiries, the man was charged with eight offences including;
- Assault police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm,
- possess unauthorised firearm,
- possess unauthorised pistol,
- handle/use firearm under the influence of alcohol/drug,
- carry firearm manner likely injure person/property,
- not keep firearm safely-not pistol/prohibited firearm,
- possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit, and,
- false representation resulting in police investigation.
He was refused bail and is due to appear at Fairfield Local Court via bedside hearing today (Thursday 23 December 2021).
A critical incident team comprising of officers attached to Auburn Police Area Command is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
That investigation will be subject to an independent review.
No police officers or members of the public were injured during the incident.
