Police lay charges – Assault Police in Darwin City

Northern Territory Police have charged a 42 year-old Girraween man after a disturbance at a licensed premises on Mitchell Street, Darwin.

At around 1.00am on Saturday (29 June 2019), Police from the Darwin City Safe Patrol were called to assist security staff to remove an intoxicated 42 year-old male after he had assaulted a security officer.

Police arrived and this male was arrested. Police were also hindered by friends of the arrested man. While being transferred into the Police vehicle the man has kicked out and struck a police officer on the chin.

This man was taken to the Darwin Watch House where he was charged with:

  • Assault a member of the Police Force
  • Assault a Worker
  • Fail to leave a Licensed Premises
  • Disorderly Behaviour in Public Place
  • Disorderly Behaviour in Police Station

A 55 year-old male also from Girraween was also arrested and charged with resisting police in the execution of their duty after intervening in the arrest of his 42 year-old friend.

Acting Deputy Commissioner Narelle Beer said;

“No one goes to work to be assaulted. Licensed Premises staff and Police use their powers to ensure Liquor laws are enforced and the safety of all patrons at licensed premises is maintained.”

“This incident had the potential for both Workers and Police to be seriously injured. The tough stance the Northern Territory Police takes on these types of unacceptable incidents will continue and people who assault police will be put before the court”
