Professor Steven Warburton has been appointed as La Trobe University’s Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching), the University has announced today.
With more than 25 years of higher education experience across Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, Professor Warburton joins La Trobe from the University of Newcastle, where he is Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education Innovation). He has an extensive record in learning and teaching strategy, curriculum innovation, academic quality, digital education and student success.
In his new role, starting 2 November, Professor Warburton will provide leadership for the quality, design and continuous improvement of learning and teaching, working closely with schools, academic leaders and professional teams across the University.

Professor Warburton said he was delighted to be joining La Trobe, where there is enormous opportunity to continue shaping contemporary approaches to curriculum, assessment, digital learning and AI while remaining firmly focused on academic quality and student success.

Professor Warburton has led major institution-wide initiatives in curriculum and assessment reform, academic quality and regulatory assurance, academic capability development and major learning technology platforms.
He is currently President of the Council of Australasian University Leaders in Learning and Teaching (CAULLT) and an International Fellow of the University of London’s Centre for Online and Distance Education (CODE).
He has published widely in technology-enhanced learning and maintains an active national and international profile in educational leadership, digital pedagogy and higher education innovation.
