Police lay charges – Assault Police in Darwin

Northern Territory Police have charged a man in relation to assaulting police in Darwin yesterday.

At around 8.20am the 52-year-old man was brought to the Palmerston Watch House after being deemed fit for custody following treatment at Royal Darwin Hospital.

The man self-harmed by striking his head on the cell wall, causing a laceration. When officers entered the cell he bit one of them and kicked the other.

The 52-year-old was taken to hospital for treatment for his self-inflicted injury.

He was later charged with:

  • 3 x Assault police
  • Disorderly behaviour in a Police Station

He was refused police bail to appear in court on 14 July 2022.

Superintendent Peter Malley said a male officer was treated for a hand injury and provided medication, while a female police officer suffered minor pain and discomfort.

“Our police officers go to work to serve and protect the community every day. When we have cause to interact with people and bring them into the Watch House it is not acceptable that they become punching bags.

“We will maintain our professionalism, charge these people and bring them before the courts.”
