Police lay charges – Domestic violence

Northern Territory Police have charged a man with multiple offences after a domestic violence incident in Maningrida earlier this week.

On 27 June 2023, a 35-year-old man allegedly assaulted his partner at a residence in the community. The victim fled into another room within the residence where the man allegedly set fire to the bedroom door.

A nearby resident came to her aid and extinguished the fire with the man fleeing the scene.

Upon police arrival the victim was conveyed to the local clinic for smoke inhalation and injuries to her head and body.

A short time later the man was arrested within the community by local police and detectives from the Domestic and Family Violence Unit. He has since been charged with:

  • Recklessly endanger life
  • Choking and strangulation in a domestic relationship
  • Aggravated assault
  • Possess schedule 2 less than traffickable dangerous drug
  • Engage in conduct in contravention of domestic violence order
  • Arson

He was remanded to appear in Darwin Local Court today.
