Police lay charges over assault, robbery of man in Warrawong

A man will face court today charged after an elderly man was allegedly assaulted and robbed near Wollongong.

Just after 1am on Friday 20 December 2019, police will allege a man punched another man, aged 77, in the head and knocked him to the ground before stealing cash outside a licenced premises on King Street, Warrawong.

A passerby came to the 77-year-old man’s assistance and he was taken to Wollongong Hospital, suffering facial and head injuries.

Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District were notified and commenced an investigation.

Following extensive inquiries, investigators arrested a 23-year-old man at a home in Stuart Road, Warrawong, about 2.30pm yesterday (Friday 10 January 2020).

He was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station, where he was charged with aggravated robbery and use violence cause wounding/grievous bodily harm.

The man was refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court today (Saturday 11 January 2020).
