Police lay charges – Riot / escape lawful confinement – Howard Springs

Northern Territory Police have charged 21 men in relation to a riot that occurred at Darwin Correctional Centre in Howard Springs on Wednesday 13 May 2020.

During the riot, a significant amount damage was caused to a number of buildings including accommodation and educational buildings, Corrections staff were able to regain control and all persons were re-secured.

Serious Crime Squad Detectives completed the two month investigation which resulted in the following charges:

21 x damage property in a riot

21 x escape lawful confinement

10 x arson

3 x assault a worker

1 x threat to burn or explode.

A 25-year-old man appeared before court on Friday 26 June and was remanded in custody.

Five men aged 21, 23, 23, 25 and 43 will appear before court on Tuesday 7 July.

Five men aged 21, 23, 29, 31 and 43 will appear before court on Thursday 9 July.

Five men aged 18, 20, 23, 25 and 27 will appear before court on Tuesday 14 July.

Five men aged 20, 22, 23, 23 and 35 will appear before court on Thursday 16 July.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Jak Evans said “This behaviour is unacceptable, this should serve as a reminder that those doing the wrong thing will be held accountable for their actions”.
