Police lay charges – Robbery and unlawful entry in Darwin

Northern Territory Police have charged a man in relation to a violent disturbance in Darwin on Saturday.

At around 12:30pm, a 31-year-old man waved down a taxi in Eaton and requested a ride to Casuarina. Upon arrival the man has allegedly assaulted the driver and stolen the vehicle.

The man has allegedly driven the taxi through Dripstone, causing extensive damage to the interior of the vehicle.

Police located the vehicle a short time later on Trower Road in Brinkin, where the man has fled the vehicle and unlawfully entered a nearby property.

Police apprehended the man after he attempted to flee the property via the roof.

He was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital after a sustaining serious injuries when unlawfully entering the property. He was discharged from hospital yesterday and has since been charged with offences including aggravated robbery, recklessly endanger serious harm, trespass on enclosed property and drive vehicle in a manner dangerous.

He was remanded to appear in Darwin Local Court today.

Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Morrissey said, “This was a particularly violent incident that has been traumatic for not only the driver of the taxi but the residents of the house unlawfully entered.”
