Police officer assaulted following traffic crash at Robina, QLD

Gold Coast police are investigating after a police officer was assaulted following a traffic crash that occurred in Robina last night.

Shortly after 8pm, a man was observed driving a ute at high speeds southbound on the Pacific Motorway at Robina near the roadworks site.

As the ute was passing through the roadworks site, it collided with two other vehicles before striking a barrier and coming to a stop.

The man then fled the ute and attempted to push a woman off her motorcycle that had stopped at the site.

A 47-year-old female police officer from the Forensic Crash Unit that was travelling on the motorway stopped at the scene and confronted the man.

The man and the police officer became involved in a struggle and the man then allegedly assaulted the police officer.

Four members of the public assisted the officer by holding the man down until more police crews arrived and took him into custody.

The police officer, a Senior Constable, was taken to the Robina Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injures.

The man was transported to hospital for a laceration to his head and his shoulder.

Several other motorists were treated at the scene and taken to hospital with what are believed to be minor injuries.

Investigating police are appealing for the female rider of the motorbike that the man attempted to steal to contact them to provide information for the investigation.

It is believed the woman was riding a sports bike.

Officers are also appealing to anyone that was driving in the area that may have dash cam or witnessed anything are being urged to contact police.

A 44-year-old man is currently assisting police with their enquiries.

Investigations are continuing.
