Fast acting police pulled a man to safety at a structure fire in Jacana on 15 January.
Police responded to reports of black smoke billowing from a property on Pascoe Vale Road about 10.30am.
Upon arrival two members from Broadmeadows Police Station discovered a car port engulfed in flames with the blaze beginning to spread to the house.
Police spotted a male occupant of the house in danger at the rear of the property.
He was attempting to retrieve a dog from the house as the flames continued to spread.
Constable Darcy Elliott, one of the members who attended the scene, said the man had to be pulled to safety as his life was deemed to be in danger.
“We had noticed the man trying to get into a door of the house right near the fire,” Constable Elliott said.
“The fire was raging so my partner and I had to take the man to safety out the front of the property.”
The 78-year-old man and his pet dog were both uninjured.
There was substantial damage to the car port and rear of the property before MFB crews were able to extinguish the blaze.
Acting Inspector Tania Gallagher credited the professional response from the members on scene.
“The attending police have acted quickly and courageously,” Insp Gallagher said.
“Fortunately both the occupant of the house and responding members have been able to walk away from this highly dangerous situation uninjured.”
The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
