NSW Police will remain throughout the City CBD and surrounding suburbs as crowds leaving New Year’s Eve celebrations make their way home across Sydney.
Operation New Year’s Eve 2023 commenced yesterday (Sunday 31 December 2023), to ensure safety as significant crowds converged on the CBD, Sydney Harbour foreshore and at events across the state.
General duties officers from multiple police area commands and districts across the state were assisted by Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, Police Transport Command, the Public Order and Riot Squad, Operations Support Group, Licensing Police, Mounted and Dog Command, Marine Area Command, and PolAir.
Over 225,000 people took advantage of the vantage points around the harbour foreshore throughout the afternoon and evening to enjoy the 9pm and midnight fireworks displays.
Across the CBD and Sydney Harbour foreshore, 19 arrests were made for various offences, including assault and drug offences.
Police are also investigating reports of a stabbing around 12.30am today (Monday 1 January 2023), in Woolloomooloo.
Officers located three men with stab wounds who have been treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for minor injuries.

Operation New Year’s Eve 2023 Commander, Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke, said most members of the public were well behaved throughout the evening.
“Every year Sydney welcomes the New Year with an extraordinary celebration across the city, and this year has been no different. Pleasingly the vast majority did so in the right spirit. There were few arrests,” Assistant Commissioner Cooke said.
“As people make their way home or continue their celebrations into New Year’s Day, police will continue to maintain a highly visible presence across the state to ensure everyone remains safe.” Assistant Commissioner Cooke said.
