Police run operation disrupt for planned protest activity

Victoria Police will run a significant public order operation next week in response to sustained protest activity planned across Melbourne.

General duties police will be supported by specialist units including the Public Order Response Team, Mounted Branch and Transit Safety Division to provide a safe environment for the whole community.

North West Metro Region Commander Tim Hansen said disruptions are likely to occur in the CBD, particularly at major city thoroughfares and arterial roads from Monday 7 through to Sunday 13 October.

“Public safety is our number one priority at these kinds of events, that includes those who are protesting and the broader community,” Cmdr Hansen said.

“We are well prepared to have a police presence at events throughout the week and will closely monitor crowd behaviour to ensure there are no breaches of the peace or other offences occurring.

“Everyone has a right to protest peacefully without impacting the rest of the community, who also have the right to go about their daily business.”

Police have engaged event organisers to discuss expectations around appropriate and safe behaviour and facilitate their lawful right to protest.

“As always anyone coming to an event in Melbourne looking to disrupt others or create conflict and incite violence can expect a firm response from police,” Cmdr Hansen said.

People can follow Victoria Police Facebook and Twitter accounts, as well as Yarra Trams, VicRoads and Metro Trains, for any updates on road closures or impacts on public transport throughout the week.

Police ask people to be aware that disruptions to their daily commute may occur and that they be patient, plan their journey and allow extra time where possible.
