Police seek help to locate stolen beer keg bandits

Yarra Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating a series of keg thefts across Melbourne, believed to be costing the beer industry over $30,000.

Empty kegs, worth around $150 each, are often left outside pubs for collection – ready to be cleaned, refilled with local beer and taken to Melbourne’s venues.

Police have been told over 200 empty kegs were stolen from premises across Melbourne’s inner suburbs over the past five months.

– 10 kegs were stolen from a pub on High Street in Northcote on 11 September 2023

– 4 kegs were stolen from a pub on Sydney Road in Coburg on 15 September 2023

– 20 kegs were stolen from a bar on Burwood Road in Hawthorn

– 60 kegs were stolen from a bar on Henty Street in Reservoir between 26 and 28 October

– 20 kegs were stolen from a pub on Cardigan Street in Carlton on 29 January

– 60 kegs were stolen from a pub on Rathdowne Street in Carlton North on 29 January

– 20 kegs were stolen from a pub on Gold Street in Collingwood on 29 January

– 10 kegs were stolen from a pub on Queen’s Parade in Fitzroy North on 31 January

– 2 kegs were stolen from a pub on Rathdowne Street in Carlton North on 1 February

It is understood thieves are selling the empty kegs as scrap for money.

Investigators believe more incidents have occurred which have not been reported to police.

Quotes attributable to Sgt. Ryan Forde, Yarra Crime Investigation Unit:

“These offenders are not attempting to steal beer. It is clear they are targeting empty kegs to make cash. They are oblivious to the detrimental affect stealing kegs has on pubs and breweries.

“We are working closely with venues as we continue to investigate these incidents and find those responsible.

“We believe there have been more incidents across Melbourne, and we’re urging anyone with information to report them.”

Anyone who witnessed the theft incidents, has dashcam/CCTV footage or information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or file a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
