Police urge revellers to exercise caution during Operation Superloop launch, South Australia

South Australia Police have today launched Operation Superloop Adelaide 500 as a proactive response to the large crowds and fast cars descending upon the city.

The four-day operation has been implemented to ensure revellers have a safe and enjoyable time during the Superloop V8 motorsport event, which organisers expect will draw in crowds of 250,000 people over the coming days.

As a result, there will be an increase in visible police presence on the ground and on our roads, and police will refuse event entry and remove any intoxicated person who demonstrates disorderly behaviour.

To prevent this from happening, police are urging attendees to exercise care and to also be patient on our roads in the coming days, as concurrent events include multiple road closures.

Superintendent Bob Gray, Officer in Charge of the Traffic Services Branch, hopes motorists and attendees will be sensible.

“We want people to enjoy the event and our vibrant city, but we also need to stress the importance of doing the right thing to ensure your day isn’t cut short by an avoidable mistake,” he said.

“In particular, we want drivers to exercise courtesy and patience, given the road closures and higher than usual volumes of vehicle and foot traffic.

“When you’re out and about, please keep a close eye on your property. Don’t leave bags unattended or valuable items on display in your vehicle.

“Don’t drink to excess, and plan ahead to ensure you get home safely, or use a taxi, public transport or ride share app, because drink driving will never be tolerated.

“Help us to ensure public safety, and preserve the inclusive, family-friendly atmosphere of the Festival season.

“And remember: these V8 supercar drivers have been specifically trained and are operating under controlled circumstances.

“You should never attempt this type of speed or driver behaviour in your personal life. Leave it to the professionals.”

The Superloop race circuit uses the city roads of the East End of Adelaide and a specifically designed track within Victoria Park.
