Policy-lite White in full flight

Michael Ferguson,Treasurer

Labor leader Rebecca White today revealed she has no idea how to manage the economy with her shrinking vision for Tasmania on full display.

Ahead of her budget reply today, Ms White made the shocking claim that the Tasmanian Liberal Government had spent too much on infrastructure.

But Ms White failed to outline which roads and bridges she would not build, which hospitals she would not expand or which schools she would not open, renovate or extend.

Instead, the Tasmanian Liberal Government, by incurring a responsible level of Net Debt, the lowest in the nation (and second lowest per-capita) in 2022-23, has leveraged a massive pipeline of investment that helped to keep the construction and building industry afloat throughout the worst of the pandemic, and positioned Tasmania well as we reopened our economy.

The benefits of this are plain to see, with very strong economic growth and record-low unemployment.

This is forecast to continue as we roll out our $5.6 billion infrastructure program over the next four years, with Treasury’s outlook indicating economic growth will remain strong, and unemployment will remain very low.

Over the Budget and Forward Estimates, we will maintain positive net operating cash flows. This means that the Government continues to live within our means. We will meet the day-to-day expenditure of Government from within our revenues.

Ms White and Labor have no alternate budget, no policies and no idea.
