Positive result for EPA against pumping company

A Preston company has been fined $12,000 after the sharp eyes of the local community members reported its actions to EPA Victoria.

Investigations started in February 2020 after reports from locals came into EPA of a white sludge seeping into a stormwater drain that emptied into Darebin Creek.

Officers investigated and traced the source to Positive Pumping of Kerr St, Preston.

In Preston Magistrates Court, the Magistrate fined Positive Pumping $12,000. EPA North Metropolitan Regional Manager Jeremy Settle said the potential effect on a creek, even from a common substance like concrete can be destructive.

“Concrete slurry is an alkaline solution. It can burn and kill native fish, insects and plants, as well as being unsightly and illegal dumping of waste,” Mr Settle said.

“Every Victorian has a duty to act to prevent pollution, Positive Pumping did not do that and has earned a large fine.”

EPA investigates reports of environmental harm from pollution and waste, and conducts proactive inspections of industrial sites. Any Victorian can report pollution to EPA’s 24-hour hotline on 1300 372 842. or go to https://www.epa.vic.gov.au/report-pollution
