Power pole EV chargers switched on across NSW

The Albanese Government is improving charging access for cleaner, cheaper-to-run cars, with the first of 50 power pole-mounted EV chargers switched on across New South Wales today.

Intellihub has been awarded $871,000 from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), to deliver streetside EV chargers in 8 NSW local government areas.

It means residents in units, terraces or townhouses who are currently locked out of the market because they don’t have access to charging infrastructure, can choose EVs.

The $2.04 million project will show how power poles can be utilised to recharge EVs and help research vehicle-to-grid technology by tracking impacts on the electricity network.

Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen said the Intellihub chargers will help deliver a national EV charging network.

“A lack of charging infrastructure is a challenge to the uptake of EVs, with a quarter of Australian households currently unable to charge from home because they don’t have access to off-street parking,” Minister Bowen said.

“The Intellihub streetside power pole chargers will eliminate barriers for Aussie motorists who don’t currently have access to cleaner, cheaper-to-run electric vehicles.

“Together with our government’s national highway network rollout of 117 chargers, the power pole installations will give more people confidence to buy or lease their own EV.”

“The government has already cut taxes on EVs through the Electric Car Discount, which will deliver up to an $11,000 a year saving on a $50,000 electric vehicle.”

Thanks to the Albanese Government’s leadership, two and half times more EVs are being sold this year than at this time last year – but we need to make sure charging infrastructure is readily available.

50 chargers will be deployed across 8 NSW local government areas of Randwick, Waverley, Woollahra, Lane Cove, Bayside, Singleton, Lake Macquarie and Northern Beaches.
