Premier’s standing invitation for PM to meet workers in Macquarie Harbour

Jeremy Rockliff, Premier

The Rockliff Liberal Government continues to back in the hundreds of jobs on the West Coast that are hanging in the balance as the Federal Labor Government mulls over the future of the salmon industry in Macquarie Harbour.

Premier Rockliff reiterated his standing invitation for Prime Minister Albanese to visit Macquarie Harbour and meet with workers who face losing their jobs if Minister Plibersek chooses to shut down their industry and force them to join the Centrelink queue.

“I welcome the Prime Minister’s visit to the Huon today and extend again the invitation for Mr Albanese to join me on the West Coast and speak with workers.” the Premier said.

“The salmon industry is the lifeblood of the West Coast community and the flow on effects from any closure will have devastating ramifications for the broader community, including local schools and health services.

“Our Government firmly believes that the Maugean Skate and the salmon industry can co-exist. That’s why we are investing $2.1 million into the Skate Recovery Fund to ensure the Skate’s long-term survival.

“We also continue to work closely with Salmon Tasmania and the national recovery team to protect and conserve the Skate.

“The salmon industry is an economic powerhouse, especially in our regional communities. It’s valued at $1.3 billion and contributes millions of dollars annually into the Tasmanian economy.”

The Rockliff Liberal Government will continue to stand up for hard-working Tasmanians and will continue its long-term plan to deliver on the things that matter to Tasmanians and their families.
