The prisoner who assaulted a custodial corrections officer at Borallon Training and Custodial Centre has been charged by police.
The 21-year-old man has been charged with one count of serious assault of a correctional services officer, an offence which can attract up to an additional seven year prison sentence.
The prisoner was moved to a detention unit, and will be transferred to a Maximum Security Unit within another prison in coming days to await trial.
The 47-year-old custodial officer injured in the attack yesterday morning was taken to Ipswich Hospital for assessment before being discharged, and is now recuperating at home.
Queensland Corrective Services Commissioner Peter Martin APM expressed his concern over the violent attack.
“Our officers deal with the most challenging and complex people in society.
“The work they do is difficult, confronting and sadly, at times, dangerous, as prisoners who have been removed from society for violent acts are prone to show the same behaviour in the prison environment.
“We as a public safety agency are committed to ensuring the safety of our officers.
“In addition to rolling out load bearing vests to all frontline officers last year, we are undertaking a review of officer safety through the use of force review to see what more we can be doing to support our front line officers.
“QCS has a zero tolerance to violence. Even one officer injured on shift is too many, and a violent assault of this nature is absolutely reprehensible.
“My thoughts are with the injured officer and his family, and I wish him a speedy recovery,” Commissioner Martin said.
