Kathleen Lim can breathe easier today, having been declared the winner of the 2020 UTAS Three-Minute Thesis Competition.
The Menzies Institute for Medical Research PhD candidate took out the $1,500 cash first prize, with her presentation Breathe Baby, Breathe, which explores a proactive, rather then reactive, approach to the care of preterm infants, one that integrates prediction, detection and automated intervention in dealing with apnea.
After being selected by a panel of UTAS experts, Kathleen will represent the University at this year’s Virtual Asia-Pacific 3MT Competition, to be hosted by the University of Queensland on October 1.
Runner-up Layla Creach (IMAS – Oceans and Cryosphere) received $1,000 for her Muddy Time Machine.
The $500 People’s Choice award, as voted by the UTAS community, went to another Menzies PhD candidate, Yaxing Meng, for When It Comes to Blood Pressure, Three is the Magic Number.
“3MT is a highlight of the year for the HDR community, and a wonderful opportunity to showcase the unique research and new knowledge created here at the University of Tasmania,” Graduate Research Manager Shauna Lee Ward said.
