Proposals sought for commercial activities in Waterfront’s Recreation Lagoon

Darwin Waterfront Corporation

The Darwin Waterfront Corporation is seeking formal proposals from businesses wishing to operate water based recreational activities in the Darwin Waterfront’s Recreation Lagoon on a commercial basis.

“This is an exciting opportunity for businesses to consider operating in one of Darwin’s safest natural water bodies,” Sam Burke, General Manager, Darwin Waterfront Corporation said.

“The Recreation Lagoon is a protected man-made lagoon with fresh sea water constantly pumped through fine mesh screens to prevent box-jellyfish and other unwanted marine life entering.”

“Located in Darwin’s premier lifestyle precinct, the Recreation Lagoon is surrounded by other attractions including restaurants, a volleyball court and a year-round program of events held in the parklands.”

“Over the past 5 years, businesses have held successful operations within this space reporting up to 23 800 patrons visiting last financial year.”

“The Corporation is now testing the market again to see if there are more ways in which this space can be utilised and activated for the benefit of the public.”

“Each proposal will be assessed on its merits, must fit within the site constraints and will be assessment in accordance with the criteria of the Submissions Guide.”

“Depending on proposals and their requirements, there may also be room to have more than one operator in the Recreation Lagoon.”

“The Corporation will allow a free of charge trial period so that the viability and suitability of the activity can be accessed before potentially entering into a longer-term commercial arrangement.”

Submissions close 4pm Friday 28 February 2020.
