The City of Greater Bendigo’s proposed Budget 2022/2023 will deliver environmental measures and projects that contribute towards the City’s goal of net zero emissions from Council operations by 2030.
Mayor Cr Andrea Metcalf said the measures put forward in the proposed Budget were in line with the Council Plan (Mir wimbul) 2021-2025 and priorities in the Climate Change and Environment Strategy 2021-2025.
“Council will continue to invest in a coordinated approach to environmental policies, strategies and programs to produce more effective outcomes,” Cr Metcalf said.
All City-run facilities will receive an energy and water tracking system to help monitor emissions and staff will be focused on helping implement climate change projects aimed at achieving zero emissions for Council and the broader community by 2030. This includes implementing emission reduction projects in partnership with stakeholders and the community through the Greater Bendigo Climate Collaboration.
To improve the environmental performance at Gurri Wanyarra Wellbeing Centre, funding has been allocated to support a range of energy efficiency works such as air and temperature management.
More energy efficient street lighting improvements will continue under the Lighting the Regions project with a $420,000 investment.
Should external funding support be achieved, it will help progress concept designs for a tailored in-stream sediment basin for Bendigo Creek in White Hills. The project is a collaboration between the City, Djandak and the North Central Catchment Management Authority.
“We know we have much work to do to tackle climate change and these measures outlined in the proposed Budget are important steps towards meeting our targets to reduce Greater Bendigo’s emissions,” Cr Metcalf said.
The proposed Budget is now available for public written comments until 5pm, Monday May 16.
