Prostate cancer rally fuels support for Aussie men

Car enthusiasts from across the country will rev their engines in September for the ultimate charity car rally in support of all Aussie men impacted by prostate cancer.

The Prostate Cancer Rally, which will see people convoy across the Australian outback from Bourke (NSW) to Barossa (SA) from 18-25 September, aims to raise vital funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.

As a prostate cancer survivor, event founder Ross Alexander, said he was passionate about raising funds to ensure more lives were saved.

“More than 3,100 Australian men die each year from prostate cancer which is far too many,” he said.

“Early detection is key – and helping people learn more about prostate cancer is what we’re all about as we drive from town to town deep in the Australian outback. And of course, we have a lot of fun too.”

Mr Alexander first launched the Prostate Cancer Rally in 2019, after taking part in charity rallies for more than 30 years.

“After my own prostate cancer diagnosis, the Prostate Cancer Rally was born. I thought it was time to create an event for those who still enjoy a trip into the outback,” he said.

“This is an opportunity to take your fully airconditioned vehicle for seven days through the outback, and across the Simpson Desert, with all your accommodation and meals organised. We also provide mechanical and medical support to all participants.

“This year for the first time, we’re also accepting 2WD and some AWD vehicles, along with 4WD.

“Let’s get together to raise much needed funds for life-saving research, vital support services and promote crucial awareness in these outback communities.”

In Australia each year, nearly 17,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer. Men living in regional and remote areas have a 24 per cent higher risk of death from prostate cancer than their city counterparts.

Those taking part in the Prostate Cancer Rally are encouraged to create a fundraising page to support men diagnosed, and make it easy for friends, family and colleagues to donate.

Funds raised will go directly towards the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia’s vital research into prostate cancer treatments, early detection programs and cancer support services.

Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia CEO, Prof Jeff Dunn AO, encouraged enthusiasts to join the rally to make a difference.

“Community support is invaluable to our work and enables us to achieve greater outcomes for men impacted by prostate cancer, and their families,” Prof Dunn said.

“Every 30 minutes one of our fathers or sons will hear the news he has prostate cancer. Alarmingly, it remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia among men, with life-shattering side effects that can impact the whole family.

“Everyone who takes part in the Prostate Cancer Rally and raises funds will help us beat this disease.”
