Public transport to double capacity

Passenger capacity on trains, busses, ferries and trams will increase in a COVID safe way from 1 July 2020.

Following NSW Health advice, from Wednesday 1 July 2020:

  • trains will carry up to 68 passengers per carriage, up from 32
  • standard two-door buses will carry up to 23 passengers, up from 12
  • ferries will carry up to 450 passengers, up from 245.

Passengers using public transport will need to leave a space or an empty seat between themselves and other passengers.

All passengers will need to find the green dots for the safest places to sit or stand. The no green dot, no spot rule still applies.

Additional transport staff including transport and marshalling officers across the network will help support capacity levels as more passengers return to work.

Since early June 2020, thousands of additional weekly services have been added across the network to meet with passenger demand.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said NSW is at a stage to safely allow more people back on public transport.

“Employers should continue promoting flexible working arrangements where possible and people are reminded to travel outside the commuter peak hours when they can, or to walk or cycle short distances,” Ms Berejiklian said.
