Pulses have a field day at Horsham

Pulse enthusiasts will be heading for the Wimmera next month as the industry focuses in on the important crops.

The Southern Pulse Agronomy Field Day (15 October) is a free event attracting industry researchers, growers and marketers.

Agriculture Victoria Senior Research Agronomist Dr Jason Brand said the annual field day was an important time to garner the latest information.

“Our field day is an ideal opportunity to hear updates on the industry, to spend time out in the field and meet with growers and other industry representatives,” Dr Brand said.

Topics for the field day include pulse disease, advances in herbicide tolerance, weed resistance, herbicide resistance, agronomic advice and nodulation/nitrogen fixing as well as specific speakers on vetch, lupins, chickpeas, field peas and faba beans.

There will also be the launch of three new pulse varieties – one each of lentil, chickpea and faba bean – as well as the opportunity to view historic variety demonstration.

The Wimmera’s annual Southern Pulse Agronomy field day will attract national attention this year as it dovetails in with the 3rd Australian Pulse Conference, (APC).

The Conference, which will run from 15–17 October at Horsham, has attracted a high caliber of presenters who will share their knowledge of pulse research and innovation.

Visitors will have the chance to join in the Pulse Field Day at Horsham on 15 October as part of the APC program.

Dr Brand said it was an ideal time with excellent conditions in the Wimmera this year to hold the field day in conjunction with the national conference, but it was possible for growers to attend just the agronomy field day at no cost.
