Queenborough Oval Works Commence

Tasmanian Government

More than 700 users of community sport facilities at Sandy Bay are set for improved facilities.

Minister for Sports and Events, Nick Duigan, said work is now underway on the Queenborough Oval upgrades, with the Tasmanian Government contributing $2 million.

“The redevelopment will benefit the whole community, make the site fit-for-purpose, and more accessible,” Minister Duigan said.

“The Queenborough Oval has been the home of many local football and cricket clubs for years.

“We know the importance of staying active, and these upgrades will ensure the facilities are accessible for all members of the community so they can continue to participate in sports.

“The clubs using the site collectively field 29 teams, and all clubs have both male and female teams participating in various competitions.”

The current building on site will be redeveloped to accommodate four new changeroom facilities, with plans to refurbish existing changerooms to include umpires’ facilities, and a gym and medical room in the future.

The existing changeroom facilities were designed for male sporting teams with urinals, open showers and bath spaces and pre-date the current Disability Discrimination Act access requirements.

Member for Clark, Madeleine Ogilvie said the community had been advocating for these upgrades for some time.

“The new and improved oval facilities will be enjoyed by generations to come,” Minister Ogilvie said.

“Upgrading this much utilised sporting facility, will ensure it is fit for purpose and meets community expectations.

“It’s fantastic to see this worthwhile development get underway. I can’t wait to see it all come to life and make our wonderful community even better.

“We are so pleased to have supported the redevelopment with $2 million to assist with construction of the new changerooms.

“This funding will ensure the oval can cater for an increase in female participation for the user clubs, address accessibility issues, and other community groups.

“Our Government through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future is committed to giving Tasmanians the sporting infrastructure they need to succeed, which is what these upgrades are about.”
