A Caloundra carer, determined to improve stroke treatment and rehabilitation for all, has been recognised with a national Stroke Foundation Stroke Award.
Caloundra’s Eleanor Horton was announced as the President’s Achievement Award winner today in an online celebration. The award acknowledges an exceptional individual who has made a significant contribution to Stroke Foundation and demonstrated exemplary dedication to improving stroke services.
Eleanor is a carer for her partner Patrick, who had his first stroke in 2000. She also cares for her parents and works as a university senior nurse lecturer. Eleanor represents carers on the Stroke Foundation Research Advisory Committee and has influenced the development of stroke policy and care design and implementation. Eleanor has also been involved with the Australian Stroke Coalition, the Queensland Stroke Clinical Network and with many research projects, ensuring survivors of stroke, consumers and carers are engaged meaningfully, and their voices are heard.
Eleanor said it is a privilege to be recognised in the Stroke Foundation’s Stroke Awards.
“Stroke recovery can be a long journey and have a huge flow on effect to loved ones,” Eleanor said.
“Being a carer was not in my life plan, but I am so fortunate to be able to be involved with the Stroke Foundation and to be able to make an impact on the lives of patients and their families.
“I would like a world without stroke – and the future of stroke care and research looks exciting.”
The President’s Achievement Award was judged by Stroke Foundation President Professor James Angus AO, Stroke Foundation Chief Executive Officer Sharon McGowan and board members.
Professor Angus congratulated Eleanor on being named the President’s Achievement Award winner.
“I can’t speak highly enough of Eleanor’s drive, dedication and leadership as a carer consumer,” Prof Angus said.
“Eleanor has championed evidence-based stroke research at every opportunity and has demonstrated ongoing commitment for improving all aspects of acute care and rehabilitation for survivors of stroke and their families.”
“People are at the heart of all Eleanor does and Stroke Foundation is fortunate to benefit from her insight, knowledge and generosity.”
The 2021 Stroke Foundation national Stroke Awards and President’s Achievement Award were supported by major sponsor Ipsen. Almost 70 people were nominated for the awards this year across six categories: Improving Life after Stroke, Creative, Courage, Fundraiser of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and President’s Achievement.
