The Sellheim to Mingela section of the Mount Isa line has now reopened for rail traffic following the derailment of four wagons of a Pacific National freight train on Monday, 23 December.
While thankfully no injuries were sustained or environmental impact caused, there was significant damage to the line, and our crews have worked as quickly and safely as possible to restore the line in less than a week.
We’re extremely thankful for the hard work of all involved in the line’s recovery, especially during the holiday season.
Over the past six days, crews have broken down the damaged track, completed reballasting and replaced the damaged sleepers and rail which were able to be sourced locally, fast-tracking the recovery works by more than 24 hours.
The Inlander passenger service, which runs between Townsville and Mount Isa twice per week, will resume services today (Saturday, 28 December).
Queensland Rail will continue to liaise with freight customers on the Mount Isa line regarding the resumption of freight services.
