Radio broadcast celebrates anniversary of war’s end

A special 1945-era radio talk show featuring local veterans and community members who lived through World War II will be broadcast in Townsville as part of a celebration of the 75th anniversary of the end of the war.

The show, which will feature Lieutenant General (Ret) John Caligari, AO, DSC, will be played on Triple T on Friday 14 August in the lead up to Saturday 15 August’s anniversary of the end of World War II.

The radio station and Townsville City Council will also broadcast the commemorative service on Saturday.

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said 15 August was a significant date in the military calendar.

“Saturday marks the anniversary the Japanese government surrendered to the allied nations – it was the first step in ending World War II,” Cr Hill said.

“Unlike most days with military significance, the end of World War II is a celebration. Being a garrison city, Townsville has always gone above and beyond to recognise the efforts of our servicemen and women based here in Townsville and across the country.

“The day is particularly momentous for us here in Townsville, as we were unsuccessfully bombed several times in the days leading up to the end of the war.”

Deputy Mayor Mark Molachino said the Defence Force was an important part of Townsville’s history and its future.

“Council is committed to encouraging support for the Australian Defence Force, as well as Defence Force families and veterans in our community,” he said.

“Obviously this year’s celebration of the end of World War II is a little different to other military milestones, but I’d still strongly encourage everyone to tune in to Triple T on Friday to listen to what it was like living in Townsville during World War II, and to listen to the commemorative service either on Triple T or on the Council website on Saturday.”

To listen to the 1945-era radio talk show, tune into Triple T on 103.9FM at 9am on Friday 14 August.

To listen to the 75th anniversary commemorative service, tune into Triple T or visit End of the Second World War at 9am on Saturday 15 August.
