Rebuilt Broome Primary School facilities officially open

  • New buildings at Broome Primary School officially opened following a fire in 2020
  • $7.2 million rebuild includes a new teaching block and administration building
  • Former administration building has been converted into a staffroom
  • Premier Mark McGowan and Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery today officially opened the new facilities at Broome Primary School, which was damaged by a fire in 2020.

The $7.2 million rebuild includes a new teaching block with four classrooms, external activity areas and student toilets, and an administration block with offices, a reception area, a medical room and an interview room.

The new buildings replace the block of classrooms and staff room that were destroyed by the fire which also damaged the school’s administration building.

The former administration building has been transformed into a staffroom, with a conference room and staff toilets.

Local builder H&M Tracey led the rebuild of the school’s facilities, providing modern classrooms and other learning and activity areas to benefit students, staff, and the broader school community alike.

As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:

“It’s terrific to see the new facilities completed, and the Broome Primary School students and staff making the most of the modern classrooms and outdoor spaces.

“I’m sure many locals who attended this school in years gone by would have felt a sense of loss after the fire, so it’s great to see the original administration block repurposed, in a nod to its history on this site.

“My Government is committed to delivering high-quality educational facilities across the State, and these impressive new buildings deliver a brilliant learning environment for students and teachers in the Broome community.”

As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:

“Broome Primary School is the oldest school in this district, so it was very sad to hear about the devastating fire that damaged buildings where many local families were taught over the years.

“The conversion of the former administration building into a staffroom is a great way to preserve the history of the school.

“I’m sure students and staff will also enjoy the school’s new facilities, which are state-of-the-art, and purpose-built to deliver high-quality education programs – while blending in with Broome’s iconic architecture – for many years to come.”

As stated by Kimberley MLA Divina D’Anna:

“Broome Primary School is such an important part of the community here. The whole community was devastated when part of the school was destroyed.

“As a parent and grandparent of children at Broome Primary School, I know how much the school community will celebrate the new modern facilities.”
