Record unemployment rate in Tasmania

Jeremy Rockliff, Premier

Under the Tasmanian Liberal Government, the Tasmanian economy is maintaining its record-breaking jobs performance, according to the latest ABS Labour Force data release for June 2023.

Premier, Jeremy Rockliff, said with 291,100 employed, we are seeing more Tasmanians in jobs than ever before. This includes a record high 140,200 women.

“We have maintained our record unemployment rate of 3.8 per cent, the lowest in Tasmania’s history, and half what it was under the disastrous Labor-Green Government in 2014,” the Premier said.

“Since getting elected in March 2014, we have seen over 56,000 more Tasmanians in jobs, including over 29,700 more women in jobs and 7,500 fewer unemployed Tasmanians.

“Labor’s continuous talking down of the Tasmanian economy doesn’t line up with what Tasmanians’ are experiencing. Contrary to the negativity and gloom of Labor, there are more Tasmanians in jobs than ever before, and they are being paid more than they ever have.

“It’s understandable that Labor wants Tasmanians to forget about the bad old days when they were in government with the Greens, but Tasmanians remember.

“Tasmanians remember what it was like to live under the tax-first-ask-later Labor-Green Government. Tasmanians remember the State being plunged into a recession in 2012-13. They oversaw unemployment rates of 7.9 per cent. They remember over 19,000 unemployed Tasmanians.

“We will never lose sight of the fact that these numbers represent the livelihoods of real Tasmanians. Each new job created is another person contributing to our economy, but more importantly, providing for their family.

“Having a strong economy allows us to invest more into the things Tasmanians care about most – health, education, housing and community infrastructure.

“This is not a coincidence; this Government’s clear plan to build a strong economy and deliver jobs growth is working. We will continue to do all we can to keep this momentum going.

“We have proven that our approach is working and we assure Tasmanians that we will not rest on our laurels. We will continue to do all we can to maintain, and indeed, accelerate this momentum.”
